Cortek
Cortek and Coil Steels building strength through partnership.
Founded in 2003 with a mission to simplify the complex, Cortek has evolved into a leader in designing and manufacturing steel framing systems for healthcare, commercial, aged care and educational applications. Originally known as SBS Group, the name Cortek has become synonymous with trust and confidence in the construction industry. This new brand builds on a solid foundation to offer unprecedented value, creativity, and possibilities.
“Our commitment to construction through innovation has meant we’ve always been at the forefront of the industry, then and now,” says Nigel Grimshaw, General Manager of Cortek. With over two decades of experience in light gauge steel pre-fabrication, Cortek aims to provide affordable construction solutions that are both logical and innovative, ensuring projects are delivered smoothly, safely, and on time.
A culture of excellence.
Cortek boasts a team of over 50 dedicated staff and has been accredited as ‘A Great Place to Work’ for three consecutive years. This commitment to positive workplace culture is driven by Cortek’s core values of integrity, innovation, involvement, and improvement.
“Positive culture is everything; it’s directly aligned with our values. Investing in our people is at the forefront and focus of our growth plan while providing future opportunities for career development to all,” Nigel emphasises.
These values ensure that every interaction with Cortek is underpinned by honesty, transparency, respect, trust, and the taking of final responsibility for actions. Cortek’s approach to innovation involves a can-do attitude, constantly adapting and challenging the status quo to find the most logical outcome. Involvement means working closely with customers to create strong relationships, and improvement is about seeing every day as a fresh opportunity to learn and grow. By encouraging and welcoming feedback, the Cortek team is committed to continual improvement to achieve excellence.
Strategic partnership with Coil Steels.
“Coil Steels is not just a supplier to Cortek; they are a strategic partner. This relationship is built on open and transparent communication, reliability, and a shared commitment to exceeding expectations. The value that Coil Steels brings to Cortek is more than simply price. It’s the willingness to exceed our expectations and deliver a reliable supply chain; it’s the people at Coil Steels that deliver real value,” adds Nigel.
“Cortek’s steel framing systems, using TRUECORE® steel supplied by Coil Steels, offer many benefits, from strength and durability to formability, design flexibility, and sustainability,” claims Dean Manicolo, State Manager of Coil Steels.
The key benefits of TRUECORE® steel.
Cortek is a design and solutions-based business that provides its customers with support from conception to completion. The company takes a sustainable approach and ensures all frames comply with Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia. TRUECORE® steel supplied by Coil Steels plays a significant role in Cortek exceeding their customer’s cost, quality, and service expectations.
TRUECORE® steel provides exceptional structural integrity with no concerns about shrinking, twisting, or warping. This ensures the longevity and reliability of Cortek’s framing systems. The superior strength-to-weight ratio of TRUECORE® steel allows for cost-effective design solutions. This not only reduces material usage but also enables creative design.
Furthermore, the coated protective layer of TRUECORE® steel offers exceptional corrosion resistance, making it ideal for diverse applications. Its formability supports innovative and flexible design solutions, catering to a wide range of project requirements from low- to mid-rise constructions, including apartments, townhouses, aged care facilities, and schools.
Commitment to sustainability.
Cortek’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its design and manufacturing processes. All frames comply with Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia, reflecting adherence to three key principles: environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and economic sustainability.
Cortek’s sustainable practices include using materials efficiently, reducing waste, and ensuring the longevity and durability of their steel framing systems. This approach not only benefits the environment but also provides long-term value to customers by reducing maintenance costs and increasing the lifespan of structures.
Innovative solutions for diverse projects.
Cortek’s framing systems are fabricated in Melbourne and delivered directly to construction sites with 3D models and layout plans for easy and fast on-site installation. This streamlined approach not only ensures precision and quality but also significantly reduces on-site labour and construction time.
“Cortek’s steel framing systems, using TRUECORE® steel supplied by Coil Steels, offer many benefits, from strength and durability to formability, design flexibility, and sustainability.”
“There’s always more than one way of looking at things, and we believe in a fourth-dimensional approach that considers every angle,” adds Nigel. This philosophy is reflected in Cortek’s dedication to creating the ideal design for every project. By working closely with their clients, the Cortek team delivers tailored solutions that meet specific project needs and exceed expectations.
The $152 million expansion of the Latrobe Regional Hospital involved the construction of two new wings, the Acute building and upgrades to existing areas. A full external prefabricated wall system was designed and engineered by Cortek to eliminate all the perimeter structural steel – a more cost-efficient alternative to a traditional structural steel design.
“Coil Steels supports our growth through their consistency of product quality, consistency of supply and price transparency.”

Frames were delivered to site as modularised panels for easy install with minimal on-site labour. Once installed, the Cortek external wall frames provided a substructure to fix fall protection, mitigating risk around the live edge of the building.
With Coil Steels as a trusted partner, Cortek is well-positioned to continue its legacy of innovation, quality,
and customer satisfaction in the construction industry. By leveraging the benefits of TRUECORE® steel and maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and customer-centric solutions, Cortek is set to lead the way in steel framing systems for years to come.
“Cortek’s journey is always evolving. We have a clear 5-year growth plan in motion, and we are continually investing and expanding our operations to strategically align Cortek with Australia’s forever-changing construction sector,” concludes Nigel.
